Uma Unfiltered: Knowledge + Knowing

Will we ever “know” everything?

I’ve had this discussion with a few friends of mine, and it’s actually one of my favourite conversation topics ever.

The short answer is no. We will, and can never, know everything.

Given the sheer magnitude of topics or areas of study that currently exist, it’s pretty obvious that no one person can hold all the knowledge that exists — but even as a population it’s pretty much impossible to ever “know” everything.

Gaining knowledge comes from answering a question, and answering a question comes from having a question.

For example, something as vague as “how does the brain work” leads to at least 100 different questions like “how does the brain register colours,” or “how does spatial awareness work?”

From those questions, we dive into specifics and have to ask questions like “which sections of the occipital lobe are responsible for recognizing the colour red?”

So you see, there are so many questions that we have yet to answer, and from a single answer we can ask 100 more questions.
