Uma Unfiltered: “what is success?”

My thoughts as I drove home from Costco yesterday

Adults always ask me what I want to do “when I’m older”. It’s such a boring question — I never liked it.

What about the things I’m doing now?

I think as kids/teenagers, we’re conditioned to believe our lives don’t actually start until the clock strikes 12:00 on our 18th birthdays.

That is so untrue.

Our lives start the second we start working towards our goals.

However, I want to emphasize that this doesn’t mean having the next 20 years of your life planned out. You don’t know what you want to major in, or even what you want to do when you graduate from university.

Success doesn’t always mean Med School, or going to an Ivy League, or getting straight As. It’s different for everyone.

Stop comparing yourself to other people, because it’s pointless. Their life goals aren’t the same as yours, so why would you measure your success based on their metrics?

There are 2 steps to “success”

  1. Learn about cool things
  2. Do cool things

See? Easy peasy.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

Keyword: journey.

Life is short. Although you should work towards a goal, you shouldn’t disregard the “working period.”

I hope that made sense.

Sure, you should be proud of achieving your goal to get your undergrad degree, but what about the 4 years you spent working for it?

Where did you fail, struggle, succeed, and learn?

I believe that success isn’t in the destination, it’s in the journey. How could you spend your entire life working towards 1 defining moment?

Whether you’re 12, 20, or 80, success is written in the stars.

Write your first line of code, publish your first article, paint your first stroke.

And enjoy it.
